Torikoe Shrine is a venerable shrine boasting a history of approximately 1370 years, and its grand annual festival in June features a lively procession of the main “Mikoshi” (Portable shrine).
Led by Sarutahiko (a tengu figure), tekomai dancers, and children carrying five-colored flags, the procession culminates in the evening with the entrance to the shrine of lanterns-adorned mikoshi.
The so-called “Sengan Mikoshi” weighs approximately four tons, said to be one of the heaviest in Tokyo, and the sight of it being energetically carried by a large crowd of bearers through the night streets is truly spectacular.
The festival typically attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and is a cherished summer tradition in Kuramae.
